Message from the Director of the Portuguese Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha)
Capitão de Mar-e-Guerra Augusto António Alves Salgado
The Portuguese Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha) was established in 1863 by King D. Luis of Portugal, who served as a Navy officer before ascending to the throne, to compile a collection that reflects Portuguese maritime activity, not just the Navy, which alone is more than 700 years old.
Despite its longevity, I am certain that in the more than 160 years since it was created, your subject of interest is one of the most peculiar topics we have been contacted about. This is primarily because we do not have any human remains in our museum. However, with over 30 years of experience in underwater archaeology projects, I can never predict when something will arise. And then, I will be the one seeking you.
Until then, I would like to welcome the participants of the Triennial Meeting of
the International Organization for Forensic Odonto-Somatology to the Pavilion Barge of the Portuguese Maritime Museum, which will take place in September
2026.
